Academic Opportunities

The Heart Disease Prevention Program (HDPP) has internship, practicum, and volunteer positions available for the spring, summer, and fall.

Internships

The purpose of the internship is to provide an environment for students to develop clinical skills that will prepare them for careers in cardiac rehabilitation, preventative health care settings, health promotion and human performance testing. Specific areas include exercise testing, body composition analysis, pulmonary function, electrocardiography interpretation and physical activity interventions.

Guidelines for Applicants
Priority will be given to students with clearly stated goals and objectives. Graduate students and undergraduates are encouraged to apply.  Applications postmarked by the following dates will be given preference:
October 1 - Spring internships
February 15 - Summer internships
June 15 - Fall internships
General Requirements
Internships are scheduled for a minimum of 16 weeks. Interns are expected to make a 40-hour per week commitment for the duration of the internship. The HDPP requirements supercede any University requirements. Interns must dress professionally. Jeans, shorts and T-shirts are not appropriate attire. Good human relations and communication skills are important. Interns should be prepared to provide mature and professional responses to the HDPP participants.

Professional liability insurance is suggested for interns. Interns are not covered by Colorado State University insurance policy.

Members of the American College of Sports Medicine have access to discounted professional liability insurance. There are several insurance companies that offer insurance of this nature.

Current CPR certification is required.

No stipends, meals or dormitory space is available for interns.

The following opportunities and benefits are provided to interns:
Interns participate in weekly seminars to discuss case studies.
Review current literature.
Interns can explore a variety of career options while gaining hands-on experience in a clinical and research environment.

Application Process

Applicants must complete an application (application may be downloaded online and printed) and submit the following:
Cover letter stating career ambitions and goals
Resume
Two written academic references (author's signature over the envelope seal)
Official academic transcripts for all degrees in progress or earned degrees

Practicum

The Human Performance Clinical/Research Laboratory (HPCRL) serves as a site for practicum students. We accept both undergraduate and graduate students. The HPCRL requirements supercede any University requirements. Interns must dress professionally. Jeans, shorts and T-shirts are not appropriate attire. Good human relations and communication skills are important. Practicum students should be prepared to provide mature and professional responses to the HPCRL participants.

The purpose of the practicum experience is to provide an environment for students to develop clinical skills that will prepare them for careers in cardiac rehabilitation, preventative health care settings, health promotion and human performance testing. Specific areas include exercise testing, body composition analysis, pulmonary function, electrocardiography interpretation and physical activity interventions.

CSU students in EX 386B or EX 486B Practica in Wellness Management may wish to consider this site if their future aspirations include work in the fields of physiological testing, cardiac rehabilitation and/or health promotion. If your interest includes physiological testing such as stress testing, we encourage you to take EX 420 Electrocardiography and Exercise Management before or concurrent with your practicum placement in the HPCRL.

Please complete an application for practicum placement in the HPCRL.
