Master of Science: Overview
|
General Program Description:
The Master of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science prepares students for careers in health promotion and exercise science. The program is also structured to prepare students for further education such as physical therapy, medical school, and doctoral study. Graduates are represented by careers in: hospital or corporate health promotion/wellness, clinical exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, exercise prescriptionist, physical and occupational therapy, medical and allied health professions, and research and academic careers. Most students are supported during their graduate study by graduate teaching assistantships (GTA), although other types of support are available.
The graduate program is highlighted by a common core of classes, significant number of elective classes, practical experience, and options for a research thesis or a non-thesis research experience. Faculty works closely with students for academic, professional and personal advising. On-site facilities are state-of-the-art and include the Human Performance Clinical/Research Laboratory, the Adult Fitness Program, and the Youth Sport Camps. Each of these provides a unique opportunity for students to develop specialized experience related to their career goals.
The Department also offers an interdisciplinary program, Exercise Science and Nutrition, in cooperation with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. This is NOT a separate M.S. degree, but is a concentration that will be acknowledged on the official transcript. Students interested in this program must first be admitted into a department. During the first semester enrolled, application to the Exercise Science and Nutrition program is made. This program is a limited enrollment program and students are admitted on a competitive basis. This curriculum does not award a Registered Dietitian degree; another curriculum would have to be taken in Food Science and Human Nutrition. Please click on the “Exercise Science and Nutrition” tab for information on this unique program.
