Heart Disease Prevention Program

The Heart Disease Prevention Program (HDPP) has several goals:

  • Assessment of known risk factors for cardiovascular disease
  • Reduction of the likelihood of developing heart and vascular disease
  • Use of cardiovascular risk factor status in the development of individualized strategies for lifestyle changes

This program is intended for the citizens of Colorado and beyond. Funds generated through the HDPP support program operations, student fellowships, and research in the HPCRL and the Department of Health and Exercise Science.

The HDPP involves three visits to the HPCRL. Prior to your first visit, you will receive a packet that must be completed and brought with you to your preliminary visit. This packet includes medical history and psychological questionnaires and an optional diet diary. During your first visit, several measurements are taken to assess body composition, lung function, strength and flexibility. This visit lasts approximately 1-½ hours. On your second visit, you will undergo a treadmill test to assess your functional capacity and heart function. This visit is also approximately 1 ½ hours. During your last visit, we review your results with you and provide suggestions for lifestyle changes. You will receive a packet containing your results. We will forward your results to your physician at no charge upon request.

The fee for this comprehensive program is $400. This includes:

  • Blood work and urinalysis
  • Anthropometrics (skinfold assessment of body composition, sagital diameter and circumference measurements)
  • Vital signs at rest while sitting and standing and during exercise
